Washington, D.C. (June 11, 2009) — In a panel session on African connectivity at International Telecoms Week organized by Capacity Media, Julian Rawle, Managing Partner at Pioneer Consulting, led a discussion with representatives from across the industry.

The complexity of operating in this market was highlighted when the panel discussed successful business strategies. Some panelists said that a long-term view is required to succeed in Africa while others advocated delivering the minimum acceptable service immediately. All agreed that local knowledge, presence, and partnerships, coupled with an understanding of the politics, are essential ingredients.

The panel agreed that the impact of new submarine fiber optic cables augers a new era where customer purchasing decisions will be driven by the services they require and what they can afford to pay. Bandwidth pricing was hotly debated with some arguing for the remuneration of investments in satellites while others posited that the market would decide the price.

All panelists were overwhelmingly bullish in their expectations that growth in demand for bandwidth will continue to be strong and they discounted the possibility that new submarine cable systems could create a destabilizing surplus. Moreover, the panelists believed that the end user would benefit fully from reductions in price at the wholesale level.

Following the debate, Julian Rawle commented, “This was an easy panel to moderate because of the panelists’ experience and the enthusiastic audience participation. We covered everything from the impact of regulation on infrastructure development, through the untapped enterprise market opportunity in Africa, to the extraordinary penetration growth of 3G mobile.”

Julian Rawle is well-known throughout the submarine fiber optic industry for his insightful market analysis and project management skills. To contact him with any questions or comments, please write to or call +1 781 281 1974.
