Bikers planning trips abroad this summer need to check they are fully covered, warns Swinton, the UK’s leading high street retailer of motorbike insurance.

When off British soil, many standard motorcycle insurance policies automatically downgrade to basic third party, providing the minimum level of cover. To maintain fully comprehensive cover, Swinton is advising bikers they may need to purchase an extension to their policy.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, said:"All motorbike insurance policies will give some basic cover for travelling in Europe. However, depending on your policy, you may only be automatically insured for the minimum amount demanded by the laws of the country you are visiting.

"We would advise anyone planning on riding their bike overseas to speak to their local broker to check the cover offered by their existing policy and if necessary increase the level of insurance for the duration of their trip."

"The risk of accidents and theft can be far higher when abroad, so it is vital to ensure you are fully covered to provide peace of mind while you are away."

Swinton Bikes offers the following tips if you are planning to ride your motorcycle overseas:
1. Maintenance - Ensure your motorcycle is checked and serviced well before your departure date and carry a small toolset for running repairs.
2. MOT and Tax – Ensure these are still valid for the duration of your trip .
3. Passport and Driving Licence – Make sure you keep these on you all the time.
4. Vehicle Registration Document – EU countries require you have your original V5 document with you as proof that the vehicle is registered to you.
5. Breakdown Cover – check with your breakdown cover provider that you are covered for taking your bike abroad.
6. Bike Tie Downs – Useful for ferry crossings to ensure your motorcycle is secure.
7. Adapter – Vital for the use of electrical items while away from home.
