Ten outstanding individuals who have played a significant role in encouraging UK entrepreneurship are to attend a special reception at Buckingham Palace tonight (13th July 2009) to be presented with The Queens’ Award for Enteprise Promotion (QAEP).

Amongst those being honoured by Her Majesty The Queen for helping other entrepreneurs are Mr Jamie Murray Wells, founder of online spectacles retailer, Glasses Direct – the youngest ever recipient of The QAEP. Other recipients include Mrs Charlotte Young, Chair of the Board of Trustees for The School for Social Entrepreneurs; Mrs Angela Wright, Chief Executive of Solent Skill Quest Limited; and Mr David Irwin, a Consultant in enterprise and economic development. A Lifetime Achievement Award – the highest award of all – will be presented to Professor Allan Gibb, OBE, Former Director of the Small Business Centre, Durham University.

Collectively, all the QAEP recipients have helped to inspire and support thousands of budding entrepreneurs throughout the UK, especially young people and those from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds.

His Royal Highness The Duke of York, said:
“My congratulations to all this year’s recipients of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion for their exceptional achievement in gaining this prestigious Award. Each one of them has played an outstanding role in supporting new generations of entrepreneurs, from all walks of life.”

Secretary of State for Business, Lord Mandelson, said:
"These individuals are inspiring tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, and giving them the skills and attitudes they need to succeed. People like this hold the key to unlocking Britain’s entrepreneurial talents and they deserve all the praise and thanks we can give them."

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion is one of four categories in the annual Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, and the only category honouring individual achievement. The other three categories are for outstanding business success in International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. Winners are announced annually on 21st April before being invited to this special Royal reception at Buckingham Palace in the summer.

Entries and nominations for the 2010 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise will open on 20th July 2009, with a deadline of 30th October 2009. For more details, visit www.queensawards.org.uk
