(NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced that XMOS, the leader in event-driven processors™, has experienced significant benefits to its website performance since implementing the Akamai Web Application Accelerator solution at the start of May 2009. In addition to improving website delivery times across its major global geographies by 249%, XMOS has also realized a 44% increase in unique users. The Company has also experienced a significant reduction in latency and a 60% reduction of hits to its origin server.

According to Jason Mayes, Lead Web Development Engineer at XMOS, prior to implementing Akamai Web Application Accelerator, the company used a local hosting provider with no co-location capabilities. As a result, XMOS experienced a number of issues – including slow web page downloads and bandwidth challenges – especially for its users in far-reaching geographies. Mayes added, “A website reflects a company’s ethos. A poorly-performing website can lead to a negative reputation. Akamai helps meet the high expectations from customers who are looking for an engaging, fast and reliable online experience.”

“Our existing servers only had a 10 Mbit publicly facing connection which did not fare well when we released multimedia and new versions of our desktop tools – both of which are quite large in size. It soon became apparent that several simultaneous users watching videos or downloading our desktop tools would use up a lot of our available bandwidth. We needed a scalable solution to cater to our growing online presence, and the high expectations of customers with increasingly fast broadband connections.”

XMOS selected Akamai due to its extensive global presence and its ability to scale efficiently to meet XMOS’s growing needs. “Akamai is more than just a CDN,” said Mayes. “Akamai provides dynamic acceleration which helps us accelerate the rest of our website, optimizing the routing, transport, and application layers.”

In its first month of implementation, Akamai Web Application Accelerator demonstrated considerable website performance enhancements for users throughout XMOS’s key geographies, including Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, and Australia, enabling XMOS to benefit from a notable overall improvement to its web page download times of 249%. The most significant of these was Asia Pacific which registered page download times cut from 17.36 seconds to 5.69 seconds. In Australia, users experienced a 72% decrease in their download times, while North America and Europe saw their times reduced by 70% and 65% respectively.

Mayes continued, “With Akamai’s support, we were able to launch our new site in June with the confidence that the site would deliver, whether users are accessing it from Chicago or Shanghai.
