PRESS RELEASE - 20/07/09

Iconic brand celebrates intergalactic milestone

Still showing great stickability – ‘Pritt turns 40’

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” - when Neil Armstrong uttered these memorable words on becoming the first man on the moon on July 20, 1969 another revolutionary change was taking place back on Earth, as Henkel launched Pritt Stick, the world’s first glue stick.

In 1967, Henkel researcher Dr Wolfgang Dierichs watched a woman apply lipstick on an airplane, and wondered why no one had yet developed an adhesive that was small, easy, accurate to apply and portable. Inspired by this idea, he set about creating the world’s very first paper glue based on the very same principle and technology of a lipstick. Two years later in 1969, Henkel unveiled the first ever glue stick and started a revolution in the world’s gluing habits.

Forty years later, more than 2.5 billion Pritt Sticks have been manufactured here in the UK alone - enough glue sticks to leave a trail of adhesive from the Earth, past the moon, on to Mars and back again.

Some other interesting Pritt facts include:

• Pritt was the world’s first branded product to be awarded a “Space Proof Quality” certificate when it was used at the International Space Station (ISS) in 2001
• In the UK alone a Pritt Stick is purchased almost every second of the day
• Every year over 130 million Pritt Sticks are sold around the globe
• Ingredients used in the manufacturing process include sugar and starch – making Pritt the safest glue stick on the market
• Pritt Stick’s formula is based on renewable raw materials, which now account for 90 per cent of its dry weight

Pritt has evolved significantly over the years and is no longer confined to just glue sticks. Through the recent launches of new product ranges such as the stylish Mystyle correction rollers and the Pritt’s KidsArt range, Pritt has continued to innovate and grow in acknowledgement of new trends and consumer demands, and appeals to both children and adults.

Pritt continues to be one of the UK’s leading iconic brands. With mass appeal, a rich heritage and a bright future, Pritt Stick will long continue to grace our supermarket shelves, office products cupboards and classrooms.
