With recent research showing drivers abroad are three times more likely to be involved in a road accident*, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH.com) the long haul airport parking specialist, has compiled a table highlighting international driving information in five of the most popular holiday destinations. The table is available in the Know Before You Go section of the website at www.aph.com/drivingabroad.
The table displays useful driving laws and advice for France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the USA helping holidaymakers find all the details they need before they drive abroad. UK holidaymakers can check out the legal driving ages, essential driving documents, drink-drive limits, seatbelt and car seat laws, breakdown laws and other useful tips.
Breakdown laws are similar in all five countries, where it is necessary for drivers to place a reflective warning triangle both in front and behind the vehicle, if broken down. In France, Spain and Italy it is compulsory to carry a reflective jacket in the car at all times and in Spain, Germany and Italy it is obligatory to have head lamp converters in the car.
One of the more uncommon laws that the research found, was the banning of horns in built up areas in Italy, Spain and France unless in cases of immediate danger as well as heavy fines being imposed for the use of derogatory signs and abusive language in Germany. Even running out of petrol on the motorway in Germany can result in a fine.
When renting a car abroad, the legal driving age for car rental in the majority of countries is 18 years. However, many car rental agencies in the USA place restrictions on car hire to drivers under the age of 25 years and drivers over the age of 71. The drink driving limits vary for each country and if broken, can enforce severe penalties and fines. Germany allows 0% blood alcohol level for drivers under 21 years of age and for drivers with less than two years of driving experience, whereas other countries impose a standard 0.05% limit for experienced drivers. If the level of alcohol in the bloodstream is more than 0.05% when driving in Germany, the licence holder can be banned from driving.
