South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust benefits from improved decision making with Datix

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest employers in the Tees Valley area, has selected DatixWeb Risk Register to enable comprehensive and consistent risk management across the trust. The trust, which includes both The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, has used patient safety software from Datix Ltd, the UK market leader in software for patient safety and risk management since 2001. An important factor in the trust securing Foundation status earlier this year was ensuring robust governance and assurance mechanisms were in place from the Board through to direct patient care.

According to Kay Davies, datix manager at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, “The trust had benefited from the Datix system before implementing DatixWeb Risk Register. Over the last few years we have been successfully using the Incidents, Complaints, Claims, Patient and Liaison System (PALS), Freedom of Information and Risk Register Modules. Feedback from the divisions and directorates is that they are impressed with data provided by DatixWeb Risk Register. As a result they now have confidence in the information and reports provided.”

The Corporate Risk Register is produced directly from Datix, providing the trust board with an updated overview of risks defined at divisional, corporate or strategic level, which are monitored within the National Assurance Framework. Each clinical division has a governance lead who is responsible for managing activity on the local risk register. Each member of staff with access to the DatixWeb Risk Register received training from the datix manager, which also included presentations from health & safety and patient safety about the risk assessment process. Highlighting these important areas raised general risk awareness of risk and patient safety.

The trust is also continuing to adapt Datix forms to incorporate updates to the Risk Assessment Policy, the setting of new trust objectives and to highlight risks that may require capital investment.

Jonathan Hazan, chief executive officer of Datix said, “DatixWeb Risk Register and Assurance Framework software enables a large organisation like South Tees to identify and prioritise the risks to its objectives, allowing the board to be fully assured that the trust's principal risks are adequately controlled.

“DatixWeb Risk Register records not only reactive risks, identified from incidents, complaints, claims and PALS but also proactive risks which have come from other sources. It provides trust boards with complete confidence that risk assessments are collected and updated at all levels of the organisation, feeding upwards to the trust Corporate Risk Register to enable informed decision making.”
