Barrie Savory, warns of the increased risk of DIY- induced back pain over the bank holiday weekend and recommends a few warm-up exercises to minimise the risk of injury

BANK HOLIDAY DIY CAN BE A DANGER TO BRITS BACKS

This year 43% of homeowners will not be able to afford to pay for home & garden renovations and instead will be doing it themselves . Leading back pain expert and author of The Good Back Guide, Barrie Savory, warns of the increased risk of DIY- induced back pain over the bank holiday weekend and recommends a few warm-up exercises to minimise the risk of injury.

According to previous research, four of the five top triggers for back pain are everyday activities that we are likely to undertake during the bank holiday break such as lifting and carrying, DIY and sleeping . Savory recommends following the example of athletes and doing a few simple warm-up stretches, which increase muscle temperature and flexibility, minimising the risk of damage.

Overall research shows that back pain in the UK is on the increase, rising by 5% in just 12 months, with 52% of people currently suffering . If the DIY does get to your back this weekend, Savory advises not to take to your bed but to keep active and keep the affected area warm using a therapeutic self-heating wrap.

ThermaCare® therapeutic self-heating wraps are an ideal product to put in your bank holiday pain relief kit. ThermaCare gives targeted relief of muscular and joint pain associated with muscle tension, overexertion and strains, making it an ideal accompaniment with household chores. The soothing back heat wrap produces a consistent heat for up to eight hours, perfect for when you are on the move over the bank holiday. The back wrap is also clinically proven to be as effective as taking six ibuprofen tablets , giving people an alternative to oral pain relief.

ThermaCare heat wraps are specially designed to fit the body, so that they can be worn discreetly under clothes. ThermaCare one size back pain heat wraps are priced at £5.86 (RRP) for two single use heat wraps. Also available in the ThermaCare product range are knee and elbow heat wraps, hand and wrist heat wraps and neck, shoulder and wrist heat wraps.
