BASIC was founded by Bolton businessman Derek Gaskell after he cared for his wife following life-saving brain surgery which left her unable to look after herself

Staff at specialist motorcycle insurance broker Carole Nash put their best feet forward to raise money in aid of the Brain and Spinal Injury Centre (BASIC) charity.

Employees of the Altrincham-based firm took part in a challenging near 15-mile sponsored walk from Styal to the Cat & Fiddle pub, a favourite biker haunt near Macclesfield. They encouraged colleagues in the biking, insurance and local business communities as well as friends and family to sponsor them. With personal sponsorship money still rolling in the 21 walkers have smashed their original £1,000 target to so far raised over £1,500.

Nicole Ryan, Carole Nash’s Head of Administration, who organised the walk : “BASIC supports people with a range of neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injuries which may be caused by car and motorcycle accidents. It’s also local to us, being affiliated to the Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centre at Salford’s Hope Hospital. We thought that through this walk we could support both the biking and local communities.” She added: “It was really good fun but quite hard work as a lot of the work was uphill. I wondered if a few of us might not make it, not least me!”

BASIC was founded by Bolton businessman Derek Gaskell after he cared for his wife following life-saving brain surgery which left her unable to look after herself. It provides information about and raises awareness of brain related injury and conditions and has funded research and life-saving equipment installed at the Hope Hospital unit.

Naturally Carole Nash is still encouraging donations and anyone wish to mark the walkers’ achievement and give to BASIC can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/carolenash
