Capital expenditure savings and better informed decision making drives uptake

Sentrum (www.sentrum.com), a specialist in data centre solutions, has today released findings from an independent research report entitled "Energy: the currency of the data centre", that show 85% of large organisations now outsource at least part of their data centre space requirements - a 42% rise on levels reported by the company in 2008.

The research also reflects that some 27% now outsource all data centre space requirements, a highly notable increase of 25% from just 2% last year. 58% now outsource some data centre space, a rise of 19%.

“The escalation in numbers now outsourcing at least part of their data centre space from 43% to 85% in such a short period of time is significant,” said Andy Ruhan, CEO at Sentrum. “Economic uncertainty has undoubtedly played a major part in accelerating the trend we started seeing last year but I also believe the change is due to the data centre industry maturing by delivering new and consistent levels of excellence to customers seeking both reliable and cost effective data centre facilities whilst wanting to avoid high capital expenditure.”

According to the research only 15% of companies do not currently outsource any of their data centre space requirements; yet this figure does include some 7% that cited plans to do so in the future.

The responses given also indicated that when some, or all, of the data centre space requirements are outsourced there was a better level of understanding within the business on the issues that affect the data centre industry. In general terms, those businesses outsourcing all data centre space requirements are, for example, more aware of the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres and were more likely to adopt the new voluntary Code.

“In a period of intense economic upheaval it is of little surprise that many businesses have opted to outsource data centre facilities,” continued Ruhan. “One in four - 23% - of companies felt their data centre developments had been over-specified and were therefore underutilised, so outsourcing just what you need at any given time is sensible business practice. Improved customer education and the fact that so many companies are outsourcing all their data centre needs also indicates a broader trend and a rising level of trust in the third party provision of world class facilities. That is an encouraging message for the industry as a whole.”
