The National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools (NAKMAS) is paving the way for other sporting governing bodies to become more inclusive with a new initiative aimed at diversifying its membership.

Having already secured accreditation to the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport Preliminary Level, NAKMAS has again stepped up its efforts on the equality, diversity and inclusion front by creating the NAKMAS Equality Training Awareness initiative.

NAKMAS instructors and their employees/volunteers will be encouraged to train under the new NAKMAS Equality Training Awareness in order to be fully aware of equality laws and issues surrounding sport. The overall aim is to ensure greater participation in the martial arts.

Sandra Beale, NAKMAS Equality Manager, says:

"There are many benefits to the Equality Training Awareness, including a greater staff and volunteer understanding of legal duties, enhanced skills and knowledge and increased active involvement in equality at every level. Most importantly the initiative will boost the number of participants, members, coaches, officials, spectators and volunteers by reaching audiences which truly reflect our society.

"Many NAKMAS-affiliated organisations have already begun to embrace equality as a central strand of their management, but even they can benefit from the training programme by building on existing good practice in equality and assessing and reviewing current equality policy.

"We are confident that this, alongside our overall commitment to inclusiveness in martial arts, will provide a template for other governing bodies in sport to follow."

Under the Equality Training Awareness those individuals within NAKMAS who have received the governing body's formal training will be certificated and will be able to display the NAKMAS Equality Training Awareness accreditation mark to demonstrate their commitment to equality issues.

Keeping with its commitment to transparency, NAKMAS will also provide a database that will include all those individuals who have been accredited to the award and will be available on the NAKMAS website. In addition to the database, NAKMAS will also promote public awareness around those that have achieved the award.

Equality Champion

To add further punch to its equality drive NAKMAS has also appointed Chris Davies, 6th Degree, Master of Chinese Martial Arts, representing Scotland on the NAKMAS National Management Committee, as Equality Champion for NAKMAS.

Chris is a highly respected officer who has been active in equality issues. As Equality Champion, Chris will look at diversity issues throughout meetings and discussions and be involved in every aspect of the organisation impacting on equality and diversity with an independent eye.

Roger Clifton, an Equality Standard for Sport Advisor, said: "When assessing NAKMAS for the Preliminary level of this Standard, I was impressed with their forward thinking and how they were determined to put the theory into practice. This training module will provide instructors and clubs with practical knowledge that they can use to introduce martial arts to a broad range of people and help expand the diversity of the NAKMAS membership. It is a great example that I would like to see other sporting agencies follow.”

NAKMAS is now working towards the Intermediate level of the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport, a charter mark for commitment to equality, and plans to target the Advanced level at a later stage.
