Murphy the Gnome is back to see his Children Story Book Launch!

After being ‘kidnapped’ from a Gloucester garden and taken on a world trip, a garden gnome returns home - and inspires a children’s book series!

It all started with a student prank; in August 2008 Simon Randles, 22, a law graduate, went off gap-year traveling and decided that he needed a companion. So when he saw a lone garden gnome in a Gloucester garden, he ‘liberated’ it and took it with him on his world travels, returning the gnome to its owners seven months later, along with a photo album recording the gnome’s global adventures throughout Africa, New Zealand, Australia and South-East Asia. The media and the public were captivated by the story and immediately warmed to the gnome - and his owners, Eve and Derrick Kelso, were so inspired by the gnome’s epic journey that Eve trademarked Murphy the Gnome - and decided to create a series of children’s books based on Murphy’s adventures!

Well-known children’s author Gordon Volke has been commissioned to write the stories, whilst Just Imagine UK Publishing and Kingsham Press Limited are co-publishing 24 books over four series. These illustrated books for very young children will see Murphy - accompanied by friend Yazzy Bear - enjoying his world trip, having exciting adventures, whilst meeting people from different countries and cultures. And whilst the main purpose of the books is to entertain and engage children, there is also an underlying educational purpose of introducing children to other nations, different ways of life, basic languages and important places of interest around the world.

Not content merely with a series of books about Murphy, Eve is working with Trans-Atlantic Distribution to produce a collection of child-oriented merchandise such as a magic passport, dolls, learning toys and games.

The stories of Murphy the Gnome were officially launched in August 2009, when Eve Stuart-Kelso visited the Chestnuts Day Nursery, a Gloucester playschool, and read the first Murphy book, ‘Murphy and the Magic Passport’ to an eager audience of young children, who gave the book their seal of approval by listening with rapt attention.

The book launch was covered by BBC Points West, which included a chance to meet Murphy himself - though the star remained enigmatically silent throughout the interview!

The story was also featured on ITV’s This Morning today.
