The UK’s leading gift and gadget website has looked at Christmas from a slightly different point of view – did you know that Rudolph and his fellow reindeer will be pulling 205 million toys for UK children alone for instance, whilst more than 172 million mince pies will be eaten throughout the festive period, whilst Santa will eat 2,740 years’ worth of calories through mince pies on Christmas Eve!

With Christmas cheer in full flow as festive lights all across the country were turned on at the weekend, the UK’s leading gift and gadget website has put together some fun facts and figures about Christmas-time.

With 10 million children in the UK alone, Santa has a huge burden to bear when it comes to ensuring kids get their presents on time this year. 82% of people in the country will celebrate Christmas.

A study of 1,210 parents has found that on average, and including stocking fillers, each child will receive between 20-25 presents, meaning that Santa’s sleigh will be weighed down by around 205 million presents for his trip to Britain alone.

With this shared between Santa’s nine reindeer, Rudolph and his team are pulling the equivalent of 23 million toys each for UK children!

Three times more mince pies will be eaten this year than there are people in Britain and Ireland put together. The study found that on average, two boxes will be eaten per family in the name of Yuletide. With six mince pies in each box, and 14 million families celebrating Christmas in the UK, 172 million of the treats will be eaten.

Santa will be munching his way through 17.5 million mince pies, whilst his reindeer will be chomping the ends of the same amount of carrots, or nearly 2 million each.

Santa will eat an estimated 2.5 billion calories on Christmas Eve alone, so there’s no wonder he’s always been on the heavy side. This sort of calorie intake is definitely warned against, as it is exactly 1 million times the Recommended Daily Allowance of calories for men. It’s a good job he’s been around for ages, because that’s 2,740 years’ worth of calories in just the one night.

The obligatory shot of spirits left out for Santa by families celebrating Christmas would also be cause for concern. 54% of parents with children said in the survey that they would be leaving a shot of brandy or something similar for Father Christmas, meaning he’d have to battle his way through 9.5 million shots of spirits. Each shot is roughly equivalent to 1 unit, and with the UK legal driving limit standing at 4 units, Santa risks being 2.4 million times over the legal limit.

One in two people said they will have the Queen’s Christmas broadcast on TV, although just 18% said they will pay any attention to it.

With 49 million adults and children in the UK giving an average of 9 presents each, according to the survey, 443 million gifts will be exchanged over the course of the festive period.

Even if just one sheet is used to wrap three presents, allowing for size difference, 147.5 million sheets of wrapping paper will be used. At 3.5m² each sheet (70cm x 50cm on average), 516,250 square kilometres of gift wrap will be thrown away this Christmas, enough to cover Great Britain and Ireland – twice.

38% of respondents said they’d be kissing somebody under the mistletoe this Christmas, which amounts to 15.2 million Yuletide kisses.

Zak Edwards, the Managing Director of and the man behind the UK’s biggest Christmas by Numbers study had the following to say,

“Christmas is a time for fun, so we really thought we’d have a good time putting these facts and figures together.

“Besides being truly worried for Santa’s health, it’s always a giggle to look at things in a slightly more irreverent way. At Prezzybox we’ve already started seeing Christmas buyers spending their hard earned money on fun gifts and gadgets, and hope they and the rest of the public enjoy these statistics and have a fantastic Christmas period!”
