Make It Cheaper, the business price comparison and switching service, has launched a free 13 page guide for anyone looking to switch on to the cheapest rates for business electricity or business gas in 2010.

The ‘Independent Guide to Switching Business Energy Supplier’ is available as a printable download and includes advice on how to avoid the pitfalls that plague would-be switchers such as having their existing contacts automatically renewed. The Guide contains all the contact information for the main suppliers of business electricity and business gas, template letters and a pre-switch checklist to make certain that companies can gain access to all the available prices.

With over 11,000 different business gas and electricity tariffs - the difference between the cheapest and most expensive is threefold. The lowest business electricity rate currently available, by switching to a new supplier, is just over seven pence per unit, whilst typical renewal rates tend to be up to double that figure - with the highest rates imposed on those who are using their energy ‘out-of-contract’. The highest rate for business electricity recorded this year, for example, has been a punishing 32p per unit for a hotel in Scotland. Based on an average annual consumption of 30,000 units (kWh) for a small business, the typical costs would be:

• ‘Switching’ rates of 7.5p/unit = £2,250
• ‘Renewal’ rates of 11.5p/unit = £3,450
• ‘Out-of-contract’ rates of 16.5/unit = £4,950

Jonathan Elliott, managing director of Make It Cheaper, commented: “The proportion of people switching is much lower for businesses than for households, yet they have so much more to gain from doing so. Why? Suppliers automatically renew business contracts before the old ones expire and that catches a lot of people out. Our Guide, indeed the whole Make It Cheaper customer service team, is here to stop small businesses from falling into this trap. We’ve managed to switch 35,000 businesses on to cheaper rates this year and, with help from the new Guide, anticipate doubling that number in 2010.”
