One of the most important festivals in Spain takes place in the spring and those staying at Seville hotels could find themselves right at the heart of the action.

Semana Santa, also known as Holy Week, is the Spanish equivalent of the UK's Easter celebrations and the festivities run for seven days from Palm Sunday until Easter Day.

Visitors do not have to be religious to enjoy the occasion and they can still marvel at the fantastic parades and colourful floats that wind their way through the Andalucian city if they are staying there at this time.

A total of 52 floats take part in the event, which reaches a climax on Good Friday, representing the different districts of the city.

Highly decorative models of religious figures sit atop these creations and they are carried by men known as Costaleros, for whom it is a great honour to bear the burden.

They often carry the floats for hours at a time and march from their local church to the main cathedral in Seville, which is the third largest building of its kind in the world and a fine example of gothic architecture.

People who do head to the event are advised to get down there early, as the streets soon become packed with tourists and locals alike who turn up to watch the magnificent spectacle.

Jessica Reading, head of marketing for LateRooms, commented: "Demand for Semana Santa is always significant and we recommend that anyone considering attending should book their hoteles Sevilla as early as possible."
