Infinity SDC Ltd has appointed MITIE Technology and Infrastructure Limited to expand its Infinity TWO low energy data centre just outside Romford, London. Once complete the development will deliver 100,000 square feet of resilient and highly efficient 21st century data centre capacity to customers at a time when companies are desperately seeking solutions to improve efficiency, increase reliability and drive down operating costs.

Mark Stokes, managing director, MITIE Technology and Infrastructure Ltd., said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for us that allows MITIE to integrate with Infinity’s in-house engineering team to deliver some of the most energy efficient solutions in the market today. Infinity TWO will quickly be recognised as one of the most efficient and resilient data centre developments around the M25. Working with Infinity we have been able to deliver industry leading technical applications to the development that will be ready for customer operation at the end of 2009.”

Martin Lynch, CEO, Infinity SDC said “MITIE brings a huge depth of data centre construction experience to this project but it has been their ability to partner with us throughout the design process in order to reach our energy efficiency objectives that has impressed us most. Historically data centres have been seen as a property issue but in the 21st century they are about total cost of operation where energy, maintenance and capital cost all interact to affect the customers’ operating costs over the contract period. We believe that we are the only data centre company truly focussed on understanding Total Cost of Ownership and that this makes significant savings on the lifetime costs of service to our customers. Working with MITIE has enabled us to drive those lifetime costs even lower and ensure we deliver the optimal solution to each of our customers’ individual needs.”

The conversion of Infinity TWO from a former distribution warehouse, into a Tier 3 – 4 high availability data centre makes a huge difference to the environment. If all of Infinity TWO’s customers moved from legacy data centres, which typically might have a power usage efficiency (PUE) of 2.1, into the new design, they would collectively save almost 6,132,000 kW/hrs of energy a year and avoid the dumping of 2,636 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere each year.

Infinity TWO is situated in a low risk area with full planning permission. The new data centre is located ideally, within the M25 and with excellent public transport links to London – Liverpool Street Station being just 15 minutes away by train. It adjoins major telecoms carriers’ main fibre routes to Central London. Currently, over 30% of the space has been contracted to customers and standard designs achieve some of the lowest PUE ratings in the industry at ratings of 1.4 and below.

Infinity provides each of its customers with dedicated and resilient M&E systems, from the HV transformer through generators, UPS and chiller systems to the individual IT equipment cabinets. Together with high levels of physical security (with all plant housed within the building shell), the provision of independent power and cooling infrastructure helps ensure availability of IT services to customers located at Infinity TWO.

About Infinity SDC

Infinity SDC provides a unique, outsourced data centre design, build and operations service to private and public sector organisations. Focused on measuring Total Cost of Ownership Infinity’s service contracts, enable businesses to take full advantage of lower operating costs at a time when capital is highly constrained.

The company is fully committed to reducing both the energy waste and the carbon footprint of the IT sector and has adopted recommendations within the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centre Energy Efficiency. Working in partnership with local agriculturalists, planning permission has been obtained for a sustainable, biomass-fuelled data centre campus using dark green energy generation on site at its Infinity ONE location.

Infinity TWO is possibly the last major data centre development to be able to comply with current planning requirements inside the M25. This major development in excess of 100,000 square feet of technical space provides Tier 3 data centre capacity in a readily accessible location being just 15 minutes from Liverpool Street station but away from all risks including flooding.

Both sites are located along major telecoms carriers’ main fibre routes to Central London and utilise common design standards to provide with dedicated and resilient M&E systems to each of Infinity’s customers. Together with high levels of physical security, the provision of independent power and cooling infrastructure helps ensure availability of IT services to all of Infinity’s customers.

Infinity SDC is funded by leading private banks having raised in excess of £23.5 million in recent funding round and holds assets of over 300,000ft2 for data centre development within the South East. Please visit for more information.
