Anyone booking Salamanca hotels in March may want to delay their visit until the end of the month to ensure that it coincides with the city's holy week celebrations.

Semana Santa is one of the biggest religious events to take place in Salamanca each year and is always of interest to those visiting the region.

It has similarities with other holy week festivities held around the country, with parades dominating the seven-day event.

Thousands of people take to the streets in hooded costumes and carry crucifixes to mark the death and resurrection of Christ.

Men carry flower-bedecked floats on their shoulders and the whole procession is followed by musicians playing brass and percussion instruments.

For anyone who wants to travel outside of the city, there are a number of celebrations taking place in rural towns and villages in the Castilla y Leon region.

Salamanca is a stunning setting for the processions due to its Baroque and Romanesque architecture and sandstone buildings, according to whatSalamanca.com.

All the parades are free to attend and they wind their way through many of the city's largest squares, such as the Plaza Mayor, before travelling through the university neighbourhood.

If you're heading to the Semana Santa this year, we strongly advise that you book your hoteles Salamanca as soon as possible, given the huge popularity of the event.
