Brits have fallen out of love with Valentine’s Day – with four out of five of us claiming it’s too commercial and more than a third planning not to celebrate it at all this year.

A new survey by friend finding website CitySocialising found almost a quarter of us hate or dislike Valentine’s Day and a massive 80% of us believe the day has become too commercial.

Now the website is organising a series of anti-Valentine parties especially for people who hate February 14.
Far from the traditional Valentine image of canoodling with a loved ones almost 40% of those surveyed said they would not celebrate Valentine’s at all.

And it seems February 14 is becoming less of a couples night and more of a night to go out and party especially for women – with 27% of single girls planning to go out with their mates compared with 19% of single men.

But despite these killjoys romance is far from dead in the UK with only eight per cent saying they would never buy a Valentine gift for their loved one and the remaining 92% claiming they spent around £40 on cards and gifts every February.

Almost 60% of us have received a Valentine card from a secret admirer and 16% admitted to sending cards to more than one person in the same year.

And a whopping 73% of Brits have surprised their loved one with an unexpected romantic gesture. Women are more romantic than their men though with 78% surprising their partners compared to just 62% of men.

But eight per cent of us admit we have put off a break up simply because we didn’t want to be alone on February 14. A cynical 2.5% of us even admit to going out with someone shortly before Valentine’s Day just to get a gift – and then cruelly dumping our heartbroken partner afterwards.

One twenty something female respondent, who asked not to be named, said: “Everyone knows Valentine’s Day is a load of hype but that doesn’t mean we don’t take part. February 14 is one of the hardest days of the year to be single.

“Everywhere you go people are loved up and canoodling. It’s enough to make you feel sick. I’ll admit to dating a guy at that time of the year just because I didn’t want to be alone. He was really sweet and gave be flowers and chocolates. I had to dump him the very next day though because I just didn’t fancy him.”

Sanchita Saha, of CitySocialising, said the site was organising a series of anti-Valentine parties at 12 cities across the UK on Saturday February 13.

She said: “What’s interesting is the 20% of people who prefer to hang out with their friends on February 14 than go on a date.

“With a mobile population and people investing so much time in their careers these days an active social life is more important then ever before.

“More and more people, of all ages, are using websites like ours to form real friendships offline. There’s no need to sit at home and mope if you’re single this Valentine’s Day when new friends are just a click away.

“There are lots of people in the same boat and now they can all get together and have their own fun.”

Dan Bentley, a 34 year old, London based bachelor, plans to attend the event.

He said: “When it comes round to Valentine’s Day every year I usually just stay in as nights out are full of couples and expensive. I’m really looking forward to a night out in London, making new friends and celebrating single life.

“You can feel like a bit of a loser when you’re alone on Valentine’s Day, but I’m going to be out painting the town red with hundreds of revellers whilst couples cough up twice the usual amount for the same old meal.”
