Carbon-free data centre draws a crowd

Held at the ANDAZ Hotel in Liverpool Street, June 10th, the seminar Carbon-free Computing – A Guide to the Dark Green Data Centre was attended by 30 professionals representing a wide range of disciplines from property agents to data centre managers.

Martin Lynch, CEO, Infinity SDC said “Increasing regulation coupled with concerns about energy cost and security of supply are creating a perfect storm for sustainable data centre computing. It is important that potential customers are able to easily differentiate genuine ‘green’ data centre solutions such as Infinity ONE, from those using ‘greenwash’ to confuse the market.

“Infinity is still the only company in the UK to commit to delivering true dark green energy to power highly efficient IT infrastructure. For customers this means they get both cost efficiency and resilience in the data centre rather than a higher energy bill for buying expensive green energy in a less efficient centre elsewhere”

The Infinity ONE data centre previewed at the event boasts its own dark green energy supply which will be generated on-site at its Suffolk Campus ready for the first customer handovers mid 2011.

Keynote speaker, Trewin Restorick, CEO, Global Action Plan said, “The UK is facing a dilemma. More data centres are required to meet the demands of the digital economy whilst at the same time we have to meet increasingly tight carbon reduction targets. We need to do more with less. Making data centres increasingly efficient will take us some of the way, but ultimately more innovative answers are required.”

Infinity ONE offers a practical solution to this tension. It is surrounded by the agricultural land which supplies an energy crop to generate an eventual 8MW supply. The crop is grown together with food crops in a beneficial rotation. A by-product of this process is a nutrient rich ‘digestate’ which is returned to the land where it both fertilises and conditions the soil resolving one of the UK’s greatest environmental challenges soil erosion. Infinity ONE whilst autonomous from this green power supply, remains fully backed by the National Grid and also benefits from other ‘green’ infrastructure including fresh air cooling and ground source heat exchange.

About Infinity
Infinity SDC provides a unique, outsourced data centre design, build and operations service to private and public sector organisations. Focused on measuring Total Cost of Ownership Infinity’s service contracts, enable businesses to take full advantage of lower operating costs at a time when capital is highly constrained.

The company is fully committed to reducing both the energy waste and the carbon footprint of the IT sector and has adopted recommendations within the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centre Energy Efficiency. Working in partnership with local agriculturalists, planning permission has been obtained for a sustainable, biomass-fuelled data centre campus using dark green energy generation on site at its Infinity ONE location.

Infinity TWO is possibly the last major data centre development to be able to comply with current planning requirements inside the M25. This major development in excess of 100,000 square feet of technical space provides Tier 3 data centre capacity in a readily accessible location being just 15 minutes from Liverpool Street station but away from all risks including flooding.

Both sites are located along major telecoms carrier’s main fibre routes to Central London and utilise common design standards to provide with dedicated and resilient M&E systems to each of Infinity’s customers. Together with high levels of physical security, the provision of independent power and cooling infrastructure helps ensure availability of IT services to all of Infinity’s customers.

Infinity SDC is funded by leading private banks having raised in excess of £23.5 million in recent funding round and holds assets of over 300,000ft2 for data centre development within the South East. Please visit www.infinitysdc.com for more information.
