Company Continues Support of Future Security Professionals Who Leverage Open Source to Further Their Educations

Wokingham, UK: 6th July 2010 – Sourcefire, Inc. (Nasdaq:FIRE), the creator of Snort® and a leader in intelligent cybersecurity solutions, today announced the recipients of its sixth annual Snort Scholarship Program. Sourcefire® awarded two scholarships, each worth up to $15,000, to university students who are using Snort to further their educations and gain hands-on experience in network security.

“As organizations are faced with an increasingly sophisticated threat landscape, Sourcefire is dedicated to supporting and developing the next generation of IT security professionals,” said Martin Roesch, CTO and founder of Sourcefire. “Tools like Snort are helping tomorrow’s security professionals build the expertise and skills needed to protect against current and future threats, especially those that utilize emerging technologies.”

To qualify for this award, candidates must be enrolled in a Snort-certified university that uses Snort or Sourcefire products to protect its network or uses Snort as part of the curriculum in the classroom. From hundreds of applications, Sourcefire selected two winners:

•Christopher Marczewski is a Bachelor of Science candidate majoring in Management Information Systems at Iowa State University. Christopher uses Snort as part of his curriculum and is planning to pursue a graduate degree in Information Assurance and a career as a vulnerability assessment/penetration testing professional.

•Janko Knops is a Bachelor of Science candidate in Network Infrastructure Design with a focus on Forensic Research at Hogeschool Zuyd in the Netherlands. Janko began using Snort as part of a university-sponsored internship program where he was responsible for researching and recommending an IPS.

To assist the winning students in completing their degrees, Sourcefire has awarded each a $5,000 scholarship for educational costs at the students’ respective universities. The winners also receive a $10,000 credit to use toward any training course or certification exam in the Sourcefire Security Education Program. The Sourcefire Security Education and Certification Programs deliver training and testing for IT staff on Sourcefire’s products and open source security solutions, either on-site or at dedicated locations around the world.

“Sourcefire’s Security Education and Certification Programs are designed to help security professionals stay ahead of the latest attacks and maximize their organizations’ security investments,” said Karen Paulson, Vice President of Services at Sourcefire. “By providing our scholarship winners with access to these programs, Sourcefire is enabling the students to gain real-world knowledge of today’s dynamic threat landscape.”

Sourcefire developed the Snort Scholarship in 2004 as a way to give back to the open source and security communities. Since the inception of the Snort Scholarship program six years ago, Sourcefire has recognized university students from countries around the world, including the United States, Australia, Turkey, Mexico and Rwanda. Roesch founded Sourcefire in 2001 to deliver commercial security solutions that leverage his open source innovation, Snort. Snort is the world’s most widely deployed intrusion detection and prevention technology with more than 285,000 registered users and nearly 4 million downloads to date. As the de facto standard for intrusion detection and prevention, Snort is used extensively by Fortune 100 enterprises and government agencies.
