Paul the Octopus could have won more than £8,700 ($13,100) with just a £10 accumulator bet on his World Cup predictions, according to research by Gaming Supermarket.

Paul, who correctly predicted the result of all seven of Germany’s games at the World Cup as well as the Spain v Netherlands final, could have been “squids in” this summer with his predictions working out at odds just above 870/1, based on the individual odds on all eight outcomes.

That means that just a £10 accumulator would have returned a staggering £8,702.70, possibly making Paul the world’s richest octopus!

The odds include Paul’s prediction of Germany’s surprise defeat to Serbia at average odds of 119/25 as well as a Spanish victory in the final at 21/20.

The octopus, which has since retired from predicting according to his owners, was asked to choose a tasty treat from one of two boxes ahead of each of Germany’s games and the final, with each box showing the flag of the competing nations.

Paul successfully predicted that Germany would succeed against Australia in their opening match at typical odds of 13/25 before selecting Serbia the following week. Victories for Germany against Ghana (9/20), England (12/10) and Argentina at 22/10 followed before he backed Spain to beat Joachim Loew’s side in the semi finals at 3/2.

Paul correctly predicted a German victory in the third-place match against Uruguay (9/10) before picking out Spain as the winner of the showpiece final.

A Gaming Supermarket spokesperson said:
“Paul the Octopus certainly caught the imagination of punters and fans alike during the World Cup and with predictions like that, it’s no surprise. We’re sure that his owners will be ruing not having a cheeky flutter on Paul’s picks this summer!”
