Adam Perrott, author of children’s book “Eerie Deirdre Darkly”, became the first recipient of The People’s Book Prize “Beryl Bainbridge Prize For A First Time Author” at an awards ceremony in Central London on Wednesday 21st July, 2010.

Swapping his usual ‘kid friendly’ attire for a tuxedo, Adam beat off stiff competition from all categories to take the prize. The honour had been created in the name of the late Dame Beryl Bainbridge, Patron of the People’s Book Prize, who sadly died just 3 weeks ago.

In his speech, Adam (27) spoke of his happiness and surprise on receiving the award and thanked his wife and 2 children, Caleb (3) and Penny (7 months) for whom he is the primary carer. After the ceremony, he joked that it would be strange to go back to feeding bottles and Spiderman action figures after such an amazing evening as his children wouldn’t care he was an award winning author; he is just daddy to them.

Adam’s book “Eerie Deirdre Darkly” was an instant local success when it was released in October 2009 and the first print run sold out within 8 weeks. It’s the very funny tale of a little girl who isn’t quite what she seems and involves monsters, hotel inspectors, talking tarantulas and a one eyed octopus called Barbara. An excellent orator, Adam has voiced the Prologue of “Eerie” and it is available as a free audio download at Visits to local libraries and schools along with the Eerie Deidre website gave the book lots of exposure and book 2 is already in the editing process ready for a 2011 publication date.

The People’s Book Prize is voted for by the public and further information can be found at
