Tastebuds.fm is a brand new music dating website that matches potential partners based primarily on their tastes in music. It integrates directly with popular Internet music radio site Last.fm, allowing users to plug in their username and immediately populate their profile. There’s also the option to manually input your favourite bands when searching for matches.
The site is the brainchild of Julian Keenaghan, web developer at popular London events site Spoonfed.co.uk, and Alex Parish, previously technical director at Spook Media, Edelman's digital department, before leaving to focus on Tastebuds.fm.
The idea was born when Alex and Julian, who are also band mates in London post rock band Years of Rice and Salt, realised their guitar wielding wasn't having the desired effect on girls. They decided to use their coding skills to build a site where music lovers could find like minded people.
While they were confident there was a community of people who would use this kind of service, they didn't bank on how successful Tastebuds.fm would be. Since the launch in June this year the site has amassed nearly 3,000 members, with hundreds more signing up each week.
Despite being relatively new to the online dating world, Tastebuds.fm has attracted plenty of media attention. It has received coverage from mashable.com, glamour.com and Men’s Health Magazine, and has drawn comparisons with other successful niche dating sites Alikewise (which matches users on their taste in literature) and Cupidtino (a dating site for Mac lovers).
Unlike its larger rivals, there's a sense that Tastebuds.fm genuinely care about their members, with co-founder Alex Parish commenting:
"It's a great feeling to be bringing people together over something as personal as music. We've already heard that some of our users have arranged dates through the site, which is brilliant. We're looking forward to the first Tastebuds.fm wedding, mostly to see what song they choose for their first dance!"
