The Selectif Pro device is an ultrasonic probe used to focus ultrasound energy precisely on a hair follicle which is gripped by the tweezer like handpiece. Ultrasound is channelled directly to the hair root where it is converted into heat. As a result, the temperature rise inhibits the hair’s re-growth. The skin in unaffected as the energy is applied directly on the hair shaft, and as this is not a light based device the presence of melanin as a chromophore is not necessary.
In this investigation, ten subjects were recruited and 8 completed the trial, all were female. All had white or grey hair on the chin and some also had fine pigmented hair that had failed to respond to at least 6 laser hair removal treatments.
Treatments were performed every 2-4 weeks and subjects had a median of 4 (3-6) treatments.
Overall assessment of efficacy 1 month afterBotox,laser hair removal,laser tattoo removal,acne treatments,anti ageing treatments, anti wrinkle treatments skin clinics, skincare, skn, sk:n last treatment session was rated by a scoring system of Score 1 (no benefit) to 6 (substantial improvement)
Practitioner average score was 4.8 (4-6) and subject average score 4.7 (4-6) indicated a high level of improvement.
Free text comments provided by subjects were: slower growth (5); softer hair (4); finer hair (5); very slow growth (2); 95% reduction (1); 80% reduction (2); 75% reduction (1); 50-60% reduction (1) 40-50% reduction (2). In response to the question ‘would you have treatment again?’ all 8 said yes. In response to the question ‘would you recommend the treatment to a friend?’ all 8 said yes. Patients were asked if they would pay for the treatment and given a range of costs from £50 (Euro 60) to £175 (Euro 210). They were asked to indicate the maximum they would pay for a treatment. All patients said they would pay, 4 chose £50. 3 chose £75 (Euro 90) and one chose £100 (Euro 120).
The operator found the device easy to use after initial training, the treatment was painless and there were no side effects.
Conclusions: The Selectif Pro Ultrasound device is a very promising tool for treating laser resistant hair with successful and substantial reduction in depigmented and fine hair. It is well tolerated with a low risk of side effects with high subject and operator approval.
