Blackboys Pre-School near Uckfield

just one of a number of green initiatives being embraced by the pre-school

A rural pre-school in Sussex is to collaborate with a forest school in the county to help its children build confidence and independence – and help them to explore their natural environment and develop their green credentials from a young age.

Blackboys Pre-School, near Uckfield in East Sussex, kicked off the six week long collaboration with the Mohair Centre (www.mohaircentre.co.uk) in Chiddingly last week. Staff and children from the pre-school will be spending Tuesday mornings at the forest school until the end of February, during which time the children will be engaging in a number of outdoor activities at the centre aimed at getting them to use their imagination and gain a greater understanding of their surrounding environment.

“As well as messing about in the woods it’s also about getting children to think about possible dangers. We’re teaching them to do mini risk assessments with every activity at the centre,” Blackboys Pre-School manager Jenny Novkovic says.

The tie-in comes amid a general ramping up of interest in environmental issues and the green agenda. Jenny Novkovic explains: “The Forest School is a whole new experience for the children. It’s always good for children to go outside but this will give them exposure to a whole new environment for the next six weeks – and it’s great for developing their confidence and independence.”

It is just one of a number of green initiatives being embraced by the pre-school, which is planning a major revamp of its own garden over the next few months and is also aiming to secure an allotment in Blackboys, next to the school itself.

“It's a great opportunity for our children to be exposed to a whole new environment,” Novkovic says, “helping them to build confidence and independence while getting a bit muddy!”
