It has been twenty five years since P&O Cruises held their first ‘Music Festival at Sea’, and the concept has become a regular feature of P&O’s annual cruise programme. Lovers of all varieties of classical music can expect to enjoy a range of performances from opera and operetta to recitals and solo performances, with lighter entertainment often including music quizzes and interviews with guest artists.
Guest presenters, all well known personalities from radio, television and stage, have in the past included Richard Baker, John Suchet and Nick Bailey – a testament to the prestigious nature of the festival events.
The festivals this year take place on select cruises aboard Oriana and Aurora. First to sail off into the sunset to musical accompaniment is Oriana, on her 17-night Western Mediterranean cruise to ports including Salerno, Rome and Florence departing 3 May 2011 – let’s hope there’s plenty of Italian opera on the menu!
Oriana next sets sail on 20 May 2011 for 14 nights, this time to the Baltic, visiting major ports such as Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg and Copenhagen along the way. She next sails on 5 July 2011 on her last musical voyage of the 2011 season, headed for the Central Mediterranean region for 17 nights, visiting ports including Dubrovnik, Split, Corfu and Cadiz.
Aurora’s first music cruise departure is on 6 June 2011, when she embarks on a 14-night voyage taking in the splendours of the Norwegian Fjords and Spitzbergen. Her next trip leaves on 28 August bound for the Eastern Mediterranean for 21 nights and passing through Athens, Istanbul, Odessa and Ephesus along the way - a classical itinerary for a classical music cruise. Her final musical journey of the year takes her to the Central Mediterranean for 17 nights on 15 October, with visits to Valencia, Palermo, Venice and Oporto included on the itinerary.
For anyone who is passionate about both cruising and music, this will be music to their ears!
