John Bradley's highly praised new book

The Foul Bowel: 101 Ways To Survive And Thrive With Crohn's Disease a newly released book written and published by Crohn's patient and author, John Bradley.

Originally of Blackburn, Lancashire but now hailing from Canada, John's qualifications include 35 years of having Crohn’s disease; 13 surgeries; 200+ consultations with gastroenterologists; 300+ blood tests; over a dozen different treatment regimes; being irradiated to Chernobyl standards; losing five-sixths of his small bowel, and having half a dozen complete strangers stick their index fingers up his bum. And he has never been happier.

The new book is a welcome user's guide for people living with Crohn's disease and is sure to benefit newly diagnosed and long term sufferers. It is a candid, humorous and inspiring guide to living with Crohn’s. The Foul Bowel offers 30 years of experience and hope, encapsulated in 101 tips for the newly diagnosed, discouraged or resigned-to-their-fate Crohnies and their loved ones.

John treats the illness as a journey of learning, demonstrating how fellow sufferers can take ownership of their condition and its treatment, offering advice on how to better deal with symptoms, doctors, diagnostic tests, medications, surgeries, diet, relationships, career and life in general.

“I’ve had 30 years training on how to have a fulfilling life while having Crohn’s Disease, so wanted others to benefit from my experience," says John Bradley. "Crohn’s is unpredictable and disruptive, with some serious medical implications, so it benefits from the sufferer taking a long-term strategic approach. But more than anything, it benefits from taking a positive approach and seeing the funny side of the many medical indignities we have to endure, both symptoms and treatments.” The outcome, illustrated by 25 original cartoons, is a celebration of life as a Crohnie. The Foul Bowel will benefit not just sufferers themselves, but families and friends of sufferers too as it helps them understand the trials and tribulations their loved ones' might be going through and better enable them in supporting the sufferer.

Crohn’s disease, first identified in 1932, is an increasingly common disease with between 3,000 and 6,000 new diagnoses each year adding to the estimated 60,000 U.K. sufferers. The illness can occur at any age but most frequently starts between the ages of 10 and 40 years. There is no cure at present, making it a lifelong, chronic condition. Crohn’s disease is inflammation of the digestive tract, causing ulceration and damage to both the lining and the wall of the intestine. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhoea and extreme tiredness. Approximately 75% of Crohn's disease patients will have major surgery in the first 10 years after diagnosis, and 50% will require further surgery. It may be difficult to maintain a normal life, which can lead to isolation. Certain jobs may no longer be possible, or they may not be able to work at all, which in turn can lead to financial hardship, loss of self-esteem, frustration and despair.

The Foul Bowel has already received excellent reviews from the medical and patient communities including:

Dr. Vernon Coleman, author of 114 books, including How To Stop Your Doctor Killing You:
“John Bradley’s wonderful book ‘The Foul Bowel’ is a must for anyone diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. It's also essential reading for relatives and health professionals. The illustrations are marvellous.”

Lee Hawkins, diagnosed with Crohn's in 2005 when aged 35: “The Foul Bowel is a remarkably well-written book with a core of humour that will appeal to most veteran Crohn’s sufferers – Thank you John.”

Previous to writing the Foul Bowel, John worked in marketing for Cadbury in both the UK and Canada and published his first book, Cadbury's Purple Reign in 2008. John lives with his wife and daughter in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
