Miren’s paintings are exactly what people want right now – beautiful, high-quality, reasonably-priced original work by a talented new artist.

The first solo exhibition of landscape and nature paintings by Czech-born artist Miren Hayek is on show at Plaisir, a homewares, fashion and gifts boutique in Biggar, South Lanarkshire until 31st March.

Called “Bohemian Caledonia,” the exhibition features ink and watercolour paintings of the Borders and Clydesdale landscape and has already proved a big hit with customers looking for original but affordable art.

Boutique owner Anthony Bowers said “It’s a tough financial climate at the moment, but customers are actually more interested in making purchases for the home than this time last year. Selling up and moving house is a nightmare, the country is still in the grip of a long winter, and there’s constant talk of public spending cuts. We’re seeing customers cheer themselves up by feathering their nest, and Miren’s paintings are exactly what people want right now – beautiful, high-quality, reasonably-priced original work by a talented new artist. ”

Brought up among the rolling hills and rich woodlands of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic, Miren moved to Scotland when she married well-known writer Matthew Fitt whose books include The Eejits and Kate O’Shanter’s Tale. She’s inspired by the dramatic Borders and Clydesdale landscapes in which she has lived for the last fifteen years, saying “I called the exhibition Bohemian Caledonia because the shapes and atmosphere in my paintings are definitely Scottish but the bright colours and light remind me so much of the Czech countryside.

"I started out taking landscape photographs but soon realised I couldn’t capture the lines and shapes I saw in my mind’s eye. Painting and drawing have become a rich source of pleasure in my life and I’m delighted that so many people are enjoying my work.”

With prices beginning at £125 for a framed original landscape, Miren’s paintings are a striking but accessible addition to any home, and are exclusively available at Plaisir.
