As a result of a link up with Lonely Planet a library of the famous travel guides are now available at all Tampopo restaurants for customers to leaf through while they enjoy their favourite Tampopo dish.
Co-founder David Fox says “I’ve been reading Lonely Planet travel guides since 1984 and have always found them to be great companions on my travels to East Asia. Now rather than getting sore knees at my local bookstore, I can read up on the region in the comfort of Tampopo before I buy the guide of my chosen travel destination. Whether it’s researching Sumatra in Indonesia whilst enjoying a Nasi Goreng, or reading up on jungle trekking in Northern Thailand whilst slurping down my Chiang Mai noodles, it’s a great way to get ideas of where to travel to next.”
Co-founder Nick Jeffrey added “As well as having a library of books for our guests to peruse while they eat, they can also buy their own copy to take away. And until 31st March as an introductory offer they’re available at a 50% discount (conditions apply). Our selection of Lonely Planet guides covers every wonderful place you can think of in East Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, you name it...
We’re delighted to link up with Lonely Planet which is part of our desire to share our passion for East Asia with our customers. Another example of this, following our recent research trips to the Far East, is the introduction of an East Asian-style “Mini Mart” retail operation at our most recent opening, in The Oracle in Reading. Here, customers can buy to take home with them the same authentic East Asian ingredients that we use in our cooking, as well as decent recipe books and the Lonely Planet guides of course”.
Lonely Planet spokesperson, Tom Hall, said: "This is the first time that Lonely Planet books have been sold in restaurants in the UK. We're really excited about this venture with Tampopo which brings together the perfect partnership of food and travel."
Tampopo focuses on the authentic signature dishes of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan and Korea, recreating the flavours and aromas traditionally found at the eternally bustling street-markets of Bangkok and Hanoi, the hawker stalls of Singapore and the noodle vendors of Tokyo.
Tampopo was founded by Nick Jeffrey and David Fox, two friends from university days. They had made various backpacking trips around East Asia, fell in love with the wonderful array of flavours of the local cooking and decided that they had to bring these delicious culinary discoveries back to the UK for everyone else to enjoy.
Nick and David founded Tampopo in 1997, opening their first site in Albert Square, Manchester. They now operate six restaurants – two in Manchester, and one each in the Trafford Centre, Leeds, Reading and Bristol.
The independent group offers fresh, healthy East Asian cooking at value-for-money prices with speedy service in a friendly, relaxed setting: steaming noodles to soothe, slow-cooked curries and sizzling stir-fries full of goodness and flavour.
They have travelled extensively around East Asia and have attended cooking schools in Indonesia (Bali and Lake Toba), Thailand (Chiang Mai and Bangkok), Malaysia (KL) and Vietnam (Hanoi and Hoi An).
