Members of the public are being given a rare chance for a family day out to visit the 15 acres of magnificent gardens and woodland at an historic Snowdonia mansion in April and May. This opportunity falls over two Bank Holiday weekends during these months so provide a great reason to come to Mid Wales for a short break.

Caerynwch Mansion at Brithdir, near Dolgellau was built by Sir Richard Richards (1752-1823), Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer, after he had acquired Caerynwch Estate following his marriage in 1785 to Catherine Humphreys. The mansion is now owned by Sir Richard’s great great great grandson Andrew Richards and his wife Hilary, who have decided to share their wonderful gardens with the public to contribute to the cost of their upkeep.

The garden open days will be from 11am to 5pm at Easter on April 24 and 25 and on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, May 1 and 2. Admission is £5 for adults, children under the age 16 enter free of charge and dogs are welcome on leads. A number of specialist workshops will be held to widen the interest of the open garden weekends.

“The gardens date back to the 1800s and were neglected in the 1950s and ‘60s before my parents began to restore them,” said Mr Richards. “My grandmother was a well known botanist and she brought back rhododendrons from China in the 1900s.

“We have a woodland garden with special rhododendrons and azaleas, an ancient oak and beech wood, water features, a river meadow, a terraced garden with herbaceous borders and lovely walks.

“Because we live in such a beautiful spot, we want to let other people share our enjoyment. We are hoping to build on the success of our inaugural open days last year, which attracted local people as well as tourists.”

He and his wife provide bed and breakfast accommodation
at the mansion and also own Torrent Walk Cottages, three self-catering holiday cottages that are popular for family holidays, mountain biking and walkers.
