22 March 2011 - Science can tell us all about the cosmos, our own planet and even what’s happening at the ‘quantum’ level. Now, it can even tell you which destinations will make you happiest, thanks to the new Fly Thomas Cook infographic.

The Fly Thomas Cook infographic taps into the findings generated by the World Happiness Database, which cross references happiness with life expectancy to measure ‘happy life years’. What the infographic does is add a dash of sunshine into the mix and shows the relationship between levels of sunshine, life expectancy and life satisfaction across the world. “This may sound like just a bit of fun, but there’s in-depth research behind the infographic,” explains Henry Sunley, Head of Fly Thomas Cook. “Doctors and psychologists have known about the dramatic effect a lack of sunshine can have on human beings for many years and have even given it a name – Seasonal Affective Disorder. What we’ve done with the Fly Thomas Cook infographic is develop it into an at-a-glance chart to help people decide where the best destinations to head for if they’re suffering from a lack of sunshine in their lives,” he adds.

Sustainable sunshine

The new infographic also takes into account our impact on the environment too. The Happy Planet Index combines the information on human well being with the environmental impact to measure the environmental efficiency with which people live long and happy lives. “The benefits of getting out in the sun don’t just improve your ‘feel good factor’, it’s also physically beneficial too,” explains Henry Sunley, “The sun is a great source of vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones and muscles, as well as giving your immune system a boost. Natural spectrum light also helps the liver to function more efficiently and clear toxins out of the body, which is why you always feel better if you’ve spent a week in the sun on holiday,” he says.

Head for Turkey for sunshine and happiness

So where are the best places to head if you’re lacking a little sunshine and happiness? “One of the best destinations for a great feel-good factor and plenty of sunshine is Turkey,” says Henry Sunley. “Flights to Turkey are now cheaper than ever, and the country really does have everything for the perfect holiday, including plenty of sunshine all year round. The country actually has a higher annual sunshine index than countries like Morocco and Spain, so if you’re looking for a winter getaway with guaranteed sun, booking flights to Turkey is a sure-fire way of boosting your happiness quota for the year!” he concludes.
