The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead

LONDON, 24 March 2011 - The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead is one of the six indoor snow slopes throughout the UK that will host the Disability Snowsport UK's (DSUK) third National Skiathon on Tuesday May 17th 2011.

Some of Britain’s top freestylers and celebrities will join forces with the British Disabled Ski team to help raise money to help disabled people throughout the UK. Everyone who wants to raise money for charity whilst having fun in the snow can take part in the skiathon. The challenge is to ski 666 runs in six hours at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead and other indoor real snow slopes.

Skiers and boarders of all ages and abilities can take part in teams of six members. Entry costs £66 per team, including equipment hire. Each team needs to raise a minimum of £666 to go towards DSUK’s overall target of £35,000. There will be goody bags with a T-shirt for all participants and the teams that ski the most runs and raise the most money for charity will win great prizes.

Snowsports are an all-over workout that helps improve balance for both people with and without disabilities. Especially for individuals who have to conquer physical limitations again and again in daily life, feeling the wind in your face as you slide down a snow slope can be a priceless experience of freedom and independence. That's why The Snow Centre strives to bring the thrills of skiing on real snow to everyone, no matter what impairments they may have. In co-operation with DSUK, they have acquired a full range of special equipment to help people with disabilities ski independently or alongside a helper. There are also several fully qualified BASI adaptive snowsports instructors at The Snow Centre. They offer group lessons and personal one-on-one sessions to accommodate for all disabilities.
