The first thing you notice when you approach the Tranquillity spa at the Riverside Health & Racquets Club Northwood is the setting.
The club is situated in 78 beautiful acres of north London that gave me the feeling I was entering an exclusive country club – you don’t have to be a member of the health club to go, but you’ll want to join after you’ve seen the grounds.
This elegant ambience was still in evidence when I entered the spa itself. The soft ambient lighting, warm décor and aromatic scents instantly relax me, a feeling heightened by the warm welcome from the manager Janine James.
We sit down and discuss what I want to get out of my afternoon at Tranquillity. Too many late nights and a hectic work schedule have given my skin a dull, unhealthy pallor, so I opt for ESPA Skin Brightener Facial.
I’m led to one of six spacious therapy rooms for this rejuvenating facial, which includes a special application of ESPA Skin Brightening Complex, rich in natural extracts from such appealing ingredients such as Hawaiian Algae and Meadowsweet.
Janine explains that every facial begins with a detailed skin analysis and includes specific cleansing techniques, gentle exfoliation, an acupressure facial massage and a deep cleansing and intensive face mask. While the mask is taking effect, she gave me a fabulous relaxing Oriental head massage that made the 55 minutes pass all too quickly and left the appearance and texture of my skin visibly better, and feeling soft, smooth and radiant (if I do say so myself!)
Janine says the process is proving popular with both men and women whose skin has lost its lustre from a combination of work pressures and environmental stresses that come with living in the capital.
For my second treatment I opted for the Jessica Prescriptive Manicure. My nails are, I’m ashamed to admit, absolutely dreadful – covered in chips, dry cuticles and brittle nails - I’m almost ashamed to hand them over but she laughs that she’s seen far worse.
Part of the 40 minute treatment is an analysis of each nail for its specific nail type. The hands are then exfoliated, cuticles are cared for with oils and creams, the nail shape is perfected and treatment basecoats and colour are applied for the perfect finish and the difference is incredible. Months of neglect were undone and I couldn’t help admiring my hand, as if I’d just been given a new diamond ring!
The Tranquillity Spa treatment menu offers a wide range of specialist therapies that use first-class products including CACI, ESPA, Guinot, Jessica and St. Tropez and if you want to come with friends, the spa can accommodate a group of up to six people.
Overall, my afternoon was deeply calming and left me relaxed and refreshed and the effects on my skin and hands were nothing short of extraordinary.
