A cartoon published last year by trade magazine Insurance Times this week really put two directors of motorcycle insurance specialist Carole Nash in the running - for charity!

Chief executive David Newman was spotted by the magazine’s diarist making an early retreat from a London conference. Unconfirmed rumours that he was off to the gym to get in training for a run to this year’s Manchester Central hosted British Insurance Brokers Association conference led to the diary page cartoon.

But to the delight of the magazine David’s turned the tables on them by taking a pedestrian approach to commuting and running the eight miles from Carole Nash’s Altrincham HQ for the opening of the conference. What’s more he enlisted – or more accurately arm-twisted – co-director Simon Jackson to join him on the run, with the dynamic duo aiming to raise funds for Riders For Health, a charity which ensures health workers in Africa have effective transport.

“Knowing I’m quite an active bloke Insurance Times decided to pull my leg a bit about the reasons for my early departure,” explained David. “It was a bit of fun which I loved to the point of proudly displaying the cartoon up at home. Then I caught sight of it last week and thought ‘why not?’ So I pulled out my trainers, got Simon on board and hit the means streets of Timperley, Sale and Manchester otherwise known as the A56!”

Preparations for the run were less than ideal as both David and Simon were forced to endure an alcohol laden opening dinner the night before their charity endeavour. “There’s nothing like an eight mile run along a major commuter route to clear the head,” joked David.

Simon offered his own summation: “I hadn’t run anywhere for months so I was really delighted when David asked me to join him for the morning after the night before,” he deadpanned.

Mind you pounding the pavements of Manchester was small beer compared to trekking across the Arctic ocean to the North Pole which David did last year in aid of for Riders for Health and Salford charity the Brain and Spinal Injuries Centre (BASIC). It was relatively straightforward for Simon too who along with other Carole Nash staff ran the 2010 Great North Run for BASIC.
