The Trustmarque Commercial Benchmarking Service saves a further £80,000 for the Public Sector

York, UK, 10th June 2011 – Value Added Reseller (VAR) Trustmarque Solutions has announced today that through its Commercial Benchmarking Service it has saved the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service £44,000 over 3 years and £80,000 over six. This is the equivalent to a 15 per cent reduction in spending, ensuring value for money on its licensing, compliance and the ability to upgrade to the latest versions.

The Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service operates 31 fire stations, four area offices and its head office. The organisation relies quite heavily on IT, providing resources for approximately 450 full time fire fighters, 350 retained duty system firefighters, 40 Command and Control personnel and 180 support personnel.

When its licensing agreement came up for renewal, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue had three options; to renew its existing agreement, look into different licensing models or steer away from a structured licensing path and let its licences revert to perpetual. In particular it wanted to deploy a licensing agreement that would ensure value for money and compliance, but at the same time would provide a simple method for managing licences and would allow the organisation to upgrade to the latest software versions at no additional cost.

When Derbyshire Fire and Rescue decided to gain a more comprehensive overview of its licensing options it immediately sought out Trustmarque’s Commercial Benchmarking service. The organisation had not embarked on a benchmarking project before, however it was aware of this service and that other public sector organisations had successfully used it.

The Benchmarking service provided the organisation with a comprehensive breakdown of the most efficient licensing options in line with its business strategy, providing the IT department with confidence in the choices made, and a business case for the selected licensing option. Trustmarque then worked closely with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue to provide advice on the latest software upgrades and details on the offers that were available. Pete Garyga, Head of IT, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue comments:
“We had already been working with Trustmarque for 11 years and we were more than happy with the service provided and confident that the team would deliver what we needed. There is always an element of reassurance when we embark on new projects with them. Initially we had already assumed we would stick with the Enterprise Agreement and just renew. However, working together with Trustmarque we decided to consider other options that provided greater flexibility and were more economical.”

By streamlining the licensing model Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will save £44,000 over the next three years, and a further £80,000 over the next six years, equivalent to a 15 percent reduction in spend. The savings came from updating the existing licensing model so that the organisation could utilise the whole server management suite and implement operations and configurations management. However, the overall benefits far exceed this, the organisation now has an Enterprise Agreement in place that provides it with greater flexibility, allowing the organisation to continue to upgrade its IT estate, and the savings made will enable the Enterprise Agreement to be deployed to other sites.

Pete Garyga expands: “It’s reassuring to know that we have investigated the options and over the next three to six years we will have a much better handle on our licensing requirements. We have a clear strategy in place that will ensure we remain compliant and gain the best value from our IT estate. Initially when we spoke about the Commercial Benchmarking service I thought there would be a lot of work involved, however it proved very easy for us, Trustmarque worked very hard and were extremely approachable throughout the process.”

Following the success of the Commercial Benchmarking Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service already has plans to enlist the help of Trustmarque on further projects, Pete Garyga concludes:

“We are now aware that Trustmarque do much more than just licensing and we are keen to continue using its value added services. Trustmarque is a trusted advisor and we value its expertise.”
