A conviction for drink driving shouldn’t be a life sentence of paying over the odds for car insurance

Motorists with a conviction for drink driving can get cheaper insurance thanks to a new scheme launched by specialist broker Adrian Flux.

The scheme provides discounts of up to 20 per cent for anyone who has received a single DR10 conviction in the past five years, and has completed an accredited drink driving course.

Gerry Bucke, general manager at Flux, said people who had been convicted of drink driving often found affordable insurance incredibly hard to find.

“It’s just one of those risks that most insurers run a mile from,” he added.

“But we have negotiated some competitive rates for those drivers who have undertaken a rehabilitation course and should, therefore, have learned from their experience.”

Successful completion of the drink drive rehabilitation course, which is only open to motorists referred by the courts, can lead to a 25 per cent reduction in a driver’s disqualification period.

The course uses presentations, videos, group exercises and discussions in subjects including alcohol education, impact on health, responsible driving, the law, sentencing, and victims.

And Mr Bucke said that drivers who have completed the course are considered better risks than those who have not.

“A conviction for drink driving shouldn’t be a life sentence of paying over the odds for car insurance,” he added.

“We recognise that a driver’s past is not necessarily a guide to their future, and this particularly applies to those who have taken steps to learn from their mistakes.”
