The ‘Row for Life’ team, a group of 10 athletes will attempt to become British record breakers by rowing a non-stop 1 million meters, (600 miles) during Cowes week this year.
Row For Life has successfully raised money for the Africa Children’s Development Trust(ACDT) with multiple team rowing events over the last 2 years, and this year will complete the immense feat of non-stop rowing over this distance and setting a new British record, whilst raising the awareness of the ACDT charity.
The Row For Life team, will be led by McTimoney chiropractor, Martin Scotcher and will set about its tough challenge during Cowes Week (6th – 13th August 2011). To complete the task, each member of the crew will have to row the equivalent of 2 ½ marathons at maximum pace. Not only this, but they must complete seamless change-overs to ensure the flywheel of the single machine never stops until the 1 million meters distance is reached. Martin estimates this will take the team a solid 2 ¾ days of rowing. Martin will also be in charge of updating the team website, and describing the team’s progress via his blog, which can be followed on the website.
The Africa Children’s Development Trust was launched by chiropractor, Nikki Collinson in 2007. She launched the charity after spending 2 ½ months in Africa where she completed a volunteer project and spent time treating many of the children she met. The charity firstly aims to provide six monthly chiropractic care to children under 16 years of age living in some of the poorest areas, villages & orphanages. ACDT also strives to provide each child with a mosquito net to support the prevention of malaria which kills approx 800,000 children in Africa each year & to help fund projects that encompass education, health & development for children in Uganda.
Berni Martin, Chair of The McTimoney Chiropractic Association, comments: “The MCA is delighted to support Martin and his team in their endeavours to break this record. The charity is so worthwhile and brings chiropractic care to those who would have very limited chances of receiving it without Nikki’s help and hard work. McTimoney chiropractors will be on hand throughout the event to help keep the team in tip-top shape. Anyone interested in hearing more or donating to the charity can do so directly via the website, www.rowforlife2011.co.uk or via the MCA’s main office (01491 829 211).
