Based in Little Venice, W9, the business comprises retail (plant centre, indoor plants, garden furniture, shop and floristry), garden design and construction and interior/exterior maintenance. Matthew was appointed Managing Director in February 2011, leading the team of 58 staff. In 2011 Clifton made a welcome return to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where it has won numerous medals including five Gold awards for Show Gardens. Personal Biography: • Despite vowing not to follow the family tradition (Matthew’s parents ran a nursery in a small village in Kent), it was while working with his father at a large historic garden in the south of England that Matthew’s interest in gardening was kindled, leading to his studies at Hadlow College, Kent, from 1990 – 1993, where he studied horticulture and garden design and construction. • Prior to joining Clifton Nurseries in February 2011, Matthew had established the London Office for The Landscape Agency, which was expanding from its base in York. He had previously spent 10 years with The Royal Horticultural Society where he became Head of Gardens Creative Development, a role which involved him working across all four RHS gardens in a creative capacity, with a particular emphasis on major landscape projects. • During his time with the RHS, Matthew was Head of Site and Curator at Harlow Carr, the Society’s garden near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, from February 2004 – 2009. At Harlow Carr he established a strong environmental ethos for the garden and led the development of a number of key projects and redesigned several important areas of the garden such as the Main Borders, Winter Walk and Streamside. • Prior to his role at Harlow Carr, Matthew was the Curator of RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex for four years from 2000 – 2004. At Hyde Hall, Matthew succeeded in dramatically transforming many areas of the garden, such as the creation of the Dry Garden, which is irrigated purely by rainfall and pays tribute to his dedication and commitment to gardening in an environmentally friendly way. In addition to his role at Clifton Nurseries and experience as a landscape designer, Matthew has also developed a successful career as a TV presenter, broadcaster and published author. He presents Channel 4’s Landscape Man, the program that follows the stories of contributors as they battle to create their own visions of landscape perfection and a book to accompany the series, Making a Garden, by Matthew, is published by Quadrille. He is a regular panelist on the long running Radio 4 show Gardeners Question Time, and had the distinction recently of appearing on The Archers in his GQT role. Matthew also writes extensively in the media for publications including BBC Gardeners World magazine, The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph and Gardens Illustrated, and lectures extensively on sustainable horticulture, planting design and wildlife and gardening. Matthew Wilson tried out several paths including journalist, hotel manager, chef and musician before following his true vocation, which has led him to becoming a respected voice within the horticultural field. A childhood love of wildlife and the environment has remained a constant theme and is reflected in all the work he does. - ends - Books by Matthew Wilson 2010 Landscape Man – How to Make a Garden – author (Quadrille) 2007 New Gardening; How to Garden in a Changing Climate – author (Mitchell Beazley) 1001 Gardens to Visit Before You Die – contributor (Cassell Illustrated) 2005 Gardening Techniques - author (Collins) How to Garden – contributor (Dorling Kindersley) Voluntary work Matthew is a former Trustee of Lowther Castle and Gardens Trust, a board member of the BBC Magazines Editorial Advisory Board and Patron of the Friends of Nidderdale AONB.
