HEALTH CLUB COULD BE HIT BY MURRAY MANIA Monday 20 June 2011 PDF Print One of the UK’s leading health club chains could be losing some weight from its own wallet – after Andy Murray’s Queen’s Club triumph led to an avalanche of new members. Esporta Health and Racquets Clubs has been offering all new tennis member that join before the tournament’s first match on June 20th a six month complimentary membership should Murray end 75 years of British hurt at the Championships. Although take-up on the scheme was steady during the French Open and subsequent Queen’s Club run, the past 24 hours has seen the clubs inundated with applications. Esporta had more sign ups yesterday than in the past two weeks combined and commercial director Mark Taylor admits Murray-mania has firmly taken over. He said: “The idea was well received from the start but there was some scepticism that we were in no danger of ever having to pay out as Andy had no chance of winning – that view appears to have radically changed with his recent triumph. “People are now seeing this as a real chance to be a member up until next year without having to pay us any fees – the reaction yesterday was overwhelming, I must admit there is a genuine belief now that we may have to pay out on this.” But despite taking a potential £250,000 hit on membership fees if Murray wins, Taylor stresses that the club’s will be rooting for him: “Tennis is a key part of what we do and we are now working closely with the LTA to help support the growth of the sport in this country – a big part of that is getting people excited about the sport which is why we are proud to throw our weight behind Andy. “We know from research that there are loads of people out there that are interested by tennis but have never given themselves the push needed to take it up and get involved, now they have a reason. “If Andy wins they will receive six full months of free racquets memberships, so by February 2012 they may be in position to win some tournaments themselves! “Esporta and the LTA want Wimbledon to be the platform for people to really fall in love with tennis, and we will be holding massive Andy Murray parties should he reach the final on July 3rd. “As with 1966 it will be a case of ‘where were you when Murray won Wimbledon’ – the answer could be at my health club celebrating a free membership!” For more information go to www.esporta.com Media contact: For more information contact Sam Webb at WAA on 0121 362 1661 or e-mail email@example.com About Esporta: Members that join on a full racquets membership before the tournament’s first game begins on June 20th (Monday) will be given a six month free fee period should Andy Murray win Wimbledon.
