TEK 1 Louise Giblin

Exhibition opens 4-16 July 2011

East Sussex sculptor and draughtsman, Louise Giblin was elected as Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2010. Her artwork has been exhibited widely in Hong Kong, the US and across the south of England. Meta-Human at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery, Pall Mall is the artist’s first solo exhibition in London.

Born 1963, into a family of artists, engineers and designers based on the Isle of Wight it seemed natural for the artist to study both three-dimensional design and Fine Art. An interest in observing and manipulating the human form led to the tutorship of Antony Gormley at Brighton. MA studies at Chelsea College reinforced the importance of historical and contextual research and the artist’s preoccupation with designed art objects at a time when conceptualism dominated.

The sculptures on display in Meta-Human are made from bronze, translucent resin and cold cast metals such as aluminium resin. The majority are based on life casts, moulded directly from people’s heads and bodies with relief surfaces designed to reflect the models’ interests and obsessions from fitness to fast cars: “Many of us use objects, environments and obsessions as a form of armour to express public aspects of our character and shield us from closer personal scrutiny.”
