In the spirit of the Olympics, ahead of London’s 2012 event, Cumbria County Council have organised their own event – named ‘Schoolympics’, which will see 600 young people come together for a fun festival of sport.

Local qualifying events have been taking place over the last few months all over Cumbria, and the winners of these festivals will come to Carlisle to represent their local area in the final event on 30th June.

The sporting events will be held at a number of venues, including the Sands Centre, Bitts Park, and Sheepmount.

A number of sports are involved, from tennis, netball and hockey, to golf, orienteering and multi skills. Not only will kids in the region have the chance to win trophies, which they can keep for a year, they will also have the chance to meet 120 young sports leaders from across the country, who are attending to assist and offer support on the day.

The Schoolympics event is being sponsored by Angel Springs, the UK’s leading water cooler service provider, who are donating 1200 bottles of water; to ensure the young athletes are kept refreshed and hydrated on the day. With the weather set to be warm, it promises to be a great day out for competitors and spectators alike.
