To mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, The People’s Bible project will let people around Britain create a handwritten, online version of the Bible using digital pens.
LONDON, 28th June 2011
Anoto Digital Pen technology is helping to facilitate a historic project kicked off on 19th of June by the Bible Society of England and Wales and the Scottish Bible Society. ‘The People’s Bible’ aims to create a handwritten, online digital version of the Bible to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.
Launched by HRH The Prince of Wales, who wrote the first two verses of Genesis, starting “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”, The People’s Bible will see hundreds of thousands of people across the UK use Digital Pen and Paper to add their own handwritten verses.
The system consists of 20 custom made ’ScribeStations’, which comprise an iPad and physical writing surface where people can write their verse using a specially designed page and the digital pens. The iPad captures the scribes’ details and serves the verse text. The scribe then copies the verses, which are uploaded to the Internet, and matched and stored in a database. All verses are available to view online as the project develops at www.thepeoplesbible.org.
“We are really excited to be associated with this historic, yet ground-breaking project”, said Peter Burtwistle, managing director of Anoto partner, Sysnet, which provided the solution. “Using Digital Pen and Paper technology to re-create the bible is a great way to bring the Bible into the 21st Century.”
Between June and November this year, the project will visit major UK cities, giving the people of Britain the opportunity to make their mark in history by adding their verse to this unique version of the Bible. The project will finish up with an event at Westminster Abbey on the 16th November.

About Digital Pen and Paper:
The digital pen looks and writes just like a normal ballpoint pen, but with a tiny infrared camera at its tip. The paper used is printed with the unique, almost invisible dot pattern, remembering what has been written or drawn on the paper and transmitting the data back to a central system via Bluetooth and mobile phone or a docking cradle.
