Bristol, 6th July 2011 – bluQube, a leading vendor of financial management software is to officially ‘adopt’ the Phesheya Racing team comprising of Nick Leggatt and Phillippa Hutton-Squire who are the first all-South-African Class40 sailors aiming to complete a circumnavigation as part of the double-handed Global Ocean Race 2011-2012 that starts on 25th September from Palma, Mallorca.
“As sponsors of the Global Ocean Race, we were keen to follow a particular crew around what will be one of the most testing sailing courses in the World. Supporting the Phesheya team adds that personal touch to our race sponsorship offering followers a ‘face’ that both our followers and own staff can identify with,” says bluQube Marketing Manager Matthew Kirby. “Class40 sailing is fast becoming one of the most exciting and ground-breaking types of sailing and Nick and Phillippa represent the perfect personalities to align our brand with. They are equally committed to the sport and always demonstrate a real sense of fun, competitive spirit and are really down to earth - qualities that clearly come across through their blogs and videos. Collectively they have a wealth of experience between them and we believe that they will be serious contenders in a race that boasts the World’s best Class40 talent.”
Nick & Phillippa’s boat is called ‘Phesheya’ which in Zulu this means ‘over the sea’. Nick Leggatt was on the crew of Steve Fossett’s 125’ catamaran Playstation when he set the outright Round Britain and Ireland record of 4 days 16 hours in 2002. Also on Playstation (later renamed Cheyenne) he was on the crew when they set the Cadiz – San Salvador (Columbus Route) record and then the Round the World record of 58 days 9 hours. His second circumnavigation was completed as navigator aboard Tony Bullimore’s 105’ catamaran Daedalus when she came second in the Oryx Quest Round the World Race.
Fellow competitor Phillippa Hutton-Squire started competitive dinghy sailing in Cape Town and later moved onto keel boats. Once she left school she trained to be a Chef and went on to work in Michelin Stared restaurants in England. She spent time working on private and charter yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean and has crewed and raced on the South Coast of England. In 2009 she teamed up with Nick to sail from Brazil to New Zealand via South Africa, a passage which gave her a considerable amount of high latitude experience.
Phillippa and Nick completed the 4×4 crossing of the Australian Outback together and then returned to South Africa and have since been competing as a team in various European yacht races and regattas with two Round Britain & Ireland races in a single season, with Phillippa being the first female to finish in the Normandy Channel Race.
Prior to the race, Nick and Phillippa will be hosting a number of corporate sailing days for bluQube on board their Class40 Boat in the Solent. During the race, they will be providing regular blogs and updates that will be available through both the Global Ocean Race website as well as bluQube Ocean Racing and bluQube’s twitter page (@bluQubeocean).
bluQube will also shortly be announcing its involvement in the virtual version of The Global Ocean Race powered in conjunction with United Games. Nick and Phillippa will be on hand to offer hints, tips and advice to competitors whilst bluQube will host their own dedicated ‘bluQube’ league and present prizes both to the winners of the five individual legs and the overall competition. The Global Ocean Race organisation expects over 250,000 gamers will take part in the virtual race with proceeds going towards the Global Vision Sailing Trust; a charity that teaches underprivileged young people life skills through sailing.”
