People have obviously become very attached to their homes on wheels and see them as a long term investment in making the most of their leisure time

(United Kingdom – 14th June 2011) Sales of caravans and mobile homes have experienced a boost in recent years. Many people with some spare money saw investing in a caravan as a ticket to recession busting holidays for years to come.

Now it seems that these homes on wheels have become so important to their owners that they’re investing as much in their interiors as they would for their bricks and mortar abodes. Gone are the days of threadbare seat covers and chintzy prints, caravan couture has arrived.

Staff at Terrys Fabrics in (Stoke/Stockport) have reported a rise in the number of customers visiting their store looking for fabrics and soft furnishings and also even enquiring about the company’s interior design service specifically for their caravan.

The predominant trend in caravan couture appears to be neutral colours with hints of vibrant shades and colourful prints. Caravan owners are looking for a comfortable sanctuary from everyday life but without compromising on modernity. Style is definitely winning over practicality – there’s no place in caravan couture for wipe clean cushion covers.

Paul McGuinness, Director of Terrys Fabrics comments: “This trend for caravan interior design demonstrates how important caravans are to their owners. They haven’t just bought them to use until the economy is on a firmer footing and they can afford to holiday abroad again, they’ve actually become a big part of people’s leisure time.

“With the British weather being what it is there’s a strong possibility that you’ll be seeing a lot of the inside of your caravan too while on holiday, so it makes sense to make the interior comfortable and stylish and make sure it’s in tune with your personality. Of course your caravan is also potentially a space for entertaining while you’re away so there is probably an element of competitive caravan couture going on as well.

“Glamping is still going strong and we anticipate that caravan couture will also be with us for some time to come. People have obviously become very attached to their homes on wheels and see them as a long term investment in making the most of their leisure time.”
