The 2011 Interim Barclay Simpson Market Report on information security recruitment, released today, provides an up to date report on the state of information security employment during the first half of 2011. The report includes a detailed salary survey and covers economic trends together with the information security environment and the prospects for those working in it.

The information security and business continuity recruitment market is currently experiencing patterns of supply and demand similar to those that existed prior to the recession. Whilst demand recovered strongly in 2010 it was heavily biased towards banking. Demand has broadened out across a wide range of end users and consultancies. The seeming increase in high profile attacks has resulted in ‘cyber security’ becoming a subject not to be ignored. The number of information security practitioners employed in the economy is growing and unemployment is rare.

Awareness of business continuity management continues to improve and global events regularly bring the need for business continuity into focus.

The report predicts steady demand for the remainder of 2011. This will include risk assessment skills covering both applications and infrastructure and PCI-DSS skills. Those focusing on network security in the contract market are likely to benefit from an increase in demand for their services to counter hacking attacks. Information security consultancies are likely to continue to be buoyed by spending on cloud security, PCI-DSS and the increased utilisation of penetration testing services.

Salary increases for practitioners in information security jobs changing employers rose to 13% in the first half of 2011 from 11% in 2010.

The report is one of corporate governance recruitment expert Barclay Simpson’s annual market reports, which also cover the Internal Audit, Risk Management, Compliance and Legal markets together with an overview of the entire marketplace.

Based on 22 years of specialising in corporate governance recruitment, the report remains essential reading for information security and corporate governance practitioners.
