Sophisticated encryption technology from Becrypt gives charity freedom of choice and peace of mind
The Salvation Army has deployed sophisticated encryption technology from leading IT and data security expert Becrypt to further enhance its flexible working practices, give users freedom of choice and demonstrate compliance with stringent Government network security standards. The international Christian charity has installed Becrypt’s DISK Protect software and Enterprise Manager security management suite to support 7,000 IT users across 18 divisions including 400 staff who in the UK and Ireland run 800 community churches and social care centres, including more than 70 ‘Lifehouse’ support and accommodation centres for homeless people.
The charity is committed to flexible working and regularly allows employees to use company equipment to carry out their duties either in the office, at sites away from the South London headquarters building or from home. Eighty percent of the organisation’s IT infrastructure is thin client which means that, having no servers on site, the majority of staff stream information to and from their PCs or laptops from a central data centre.
The threat of data leakage caused by employees’ lost or stolen laptops together with increased pressure from the Government to comply with strict network security standards has provided a solid business case for investing in a more secure network. Last year, the charity conducted a thorough review of the marketplace, initially approaching leading players in the industry for a solution that could secure the charity’s 1,000 plus laptop estate before finally selecting Becrypt over McAfee.
According to Neil Edmonds, IT Operations Manager, UK Territory of the Salvation Army: “The proposed solutions of most vendors were disappointing, often clunky, difficult to use with high maintenance overheads. What we liked about Becrypt was its simplicity. It is easy to install, configure and manage and offers the superior encryption levels we needed. Becrypt won hands down beating the competition with an all round high value product at a good value price, essential for a not-for-profit company such as ours.”
In the second half of 2010, the installation of Becrypt’s DISK Protect full disk encryption software began using the company’s Enterprise Manager security management suite to ensure fast, remote deployment and efficient ongoing management of the Becrypt estate from a central location.
Much of the Salvation Army’s information is accessed via Government, and other public sector body networks, which raises the security threat associated with using company equipment off-site. Being government-approved, Becrypt’s solution gave Neil and his team tremendous assurance that they were partnering with a technology vendor who took compliance issues very seriously. They are confident they can entrust Becrypt with sensitive data that is central to running its many campaigns across the UK and Ireland, knowing it is safe even if a laptop goes missing or ends up in the wrong hands.
“Becrypt has given us complete peace of mind. If one of our staff is unlucky enough to be burgled and one of our laptops is stolen from their home, we can say hand on heart that the information stored on the laptop is safe and we’re not at risk. Knowing that our data, the very lifeblood of our business, is completely protected takes the weight off our shoulders and gives us time and energy to devote to future IT projects that add real value to our users,” added Mr Edmonds.
With the issue of security under control, the IT department is free to concentrate on its next big project: ‘Bring Your Own Computer’. Their mission is to give staff the option to bring their own personal IT equipment into the workplace and safely connect to the network and access resources quickly and securely. Neil believes this approach will give users complete freedom of choice and drive down capital costs at the same time.
Neil is currently considering Becrypt’s Trusted Client, an innovative solution that transforms an unmanaged machine, such as a laptop, into a secure remote access point, to help realise his vision. Trusted Client will further enhance flexible working options across the Salvation Army allowing employees to connect to the organisation’s network and data whilst preventing data loss and leakage.
