Major teaching hospital leads the way with innovative approach to fully integrated workforce management systems
SMART, a leading provider of workforce management solutions, has supplied its Bank, eRostering and Time & Attendance solution to Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust. The Bank management system has already been implemented, and when combined with new working processes is on target to save the Trust a conservatively estimated £5million per year on agency costs. The trust is now rolling out eRostering and Time & Attendance to all departments with the exclusion of consultants, including the Chief Executive and the Executive team. Staff will use hand readers to clock in and out for the Time and Attendance system.
The implementation of the SMART solution is part a broader HR project to transform working practices of the trust. The SMART system enables matrons and managers to review the skill mix required for each shift and then allocate the appropriate numbers of staff in the most efficient way. If there are any gaps in a roster the system alerts the manager who is then able to either search the Bank for a suitable replacement or redeploy one of the trusts generalist nursing staff who are able to provide cover for a number of different wards. Only if there is no suitable match at the Bank will agency staff be used, and then the booking, hours worked and payments are managed through Skillstream, which is interfaced to the SMART system.
