Safety and Solvency: The case for a new approach to patient safety report now available
Datix, a global supplier of patient safety software for healthcare risk management and Volterra Health a specialist consultancy for the healthcare sector have teamed up to produce a new report on quality and safety of patient care in the UK in the coming years. With the English National Health Service (NHS) currently undergoing major reforms the report offers a model for a new approach to patient safety that harnesses best practice and innovative technology to deliver improved safety and greater efficiency while reducing costs.
Professor Nick Bosanquet, co-founder of Volterra Health and co-author of the report commented, “The NHS is fast running out of money, in fact the pot could well be empty by the end of this year, as a result there is an urgent requirement for a re-assessment of how patient safety is paid for and managed. This new report looks at the need to make patient safety reporting a positive activity which will save rather than cost money. In the new more competitive NHS landscape quality and efficiency will be used to distinguish one provider from the rest.”
Volterra Health is a joint venture between Nick Bosanquet, Professor of Health Policy at Imperial College and Volterra Consulting which specialises in understanding practical business issues with expertise in building models, publishing forecasts and advising governments and business. Professor Bosanquet is a member of the Department of Health Advisory Group on a Reform Cancer Strategy. He has been an Advisor on public expenditure to the UK Commons Health Committee since 2001.
Datix is an established provider of patient safety software to over 70% of the UK NHS and private hospitals. Datix was recently ranked 21st in The Sunday Times International Track 100 league table as a result of its continued growth in the UK Canada, USA and Australia.
Co-author of the new report is Charlotte Alldritt, a Senior Consultant and co-founder of Volterra Health. As a researcher for the influential 2020 Public Services Trust her publications include “Online or In-line: the future of information and communication technology in public services”.
Jonathan Hazan, Chief Executive at Datix said, “This major new piece of research is essential in such turbulent times. The new phase of patient safety is about prevention, raising staff capability and providing service on an integrated basis. This important piece of research has shown that proactive risk management can reduce the level, cost and added complexity caused by medical harm while providing a model for second generation patient safety.”
The report was launched at an event attended by Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell MP for Charnwood in Leicestershire and Chair of the Health Select Committee in London earlier this month and a copy of the report is available at www.datix.co.uk
