SOURCEFIRE SECURITY ANALYSIS REPORTS ON GLOBAL THREAT TRENDS Wednesday 21 September 2011 PDF Print Immunet statistics compare malware threats on both sides of the Atlantic Wokingham, UK – September 21st, 2011 -- Sourcefire, Inc. (Nasdaq: FIRE), a leader in intelligent cybersecurity solutions, today unveiled recent findings from its anti-malware solution. By segmenting the data geographically, the analysis highlighted interesting comparisons between the United States and the UK, with the most prevalent threat for both countries being a web search toolbar that displays unwanted advertisements and dramatically slows PCs down. Immunet™ by Sourcefire provides essential anti-malware protection for PC users, which leverages the collective intelligence of a growing community to provide a collaborative approach to endpoint security. Recent analysis by Sourcefire showed that the most widespread threat that users in both the U.S. and UK were exposed to was actually the same. This threat is a web search toolbar that displays unwanted advertisements and slows down PCs, especially when browsing the Internet, hijacks search engine results and tracks users online behavior which compromises their privacy. This particular threat was caught using a detection technology that leverages its data-driven architecture by performing sophisticated back-end analytics. Currently only about a third of the major anti-malware vendors can detect this threat, Sourcefire being one of these. Another interesting comparative metric found was the number of infections per active user. The U.S. has about 0.43 infections per active user (i.e. out of about 100 active users, 43 experience infections on their machines). This places the U.S. in fourth place among countries where the Sourcefire anti-malware technology has a substantial presence (i.e. 10,000+ users). UK is in fifth place, literally just behind the U.S., with 0.39 infections per active user. Japan was the country with the fewest infections per user and India and Russia have the largest number of infections per user. Findings also measured the benign-to-malicious query ratio for the two user populations coming from these countries and found that there is a richer variety of legitimate software on U.S. PCs compared to the UK. For the U.S., the ratio is 3524 to 1. For the UK, the ratio is 1,959 to 1. Therefore, even though users from the UK get infected slightly less often, a much larger portion of the files queried from this region is malicious. These statistics also point to the fact that U.S. users have a lot more software on their systems, potentially an outcome of a consumer culture where people install a lot of different applications such as games, etc. “Today’s threats are quick-changing and very targeted,” said Dominic Storey, Sourcefire’s EMEA Technical Director. “Sourcefire sees tens of thousands of malware variants each day and 75 percent of these are seen only on a single endpoint. It’s critical that consumers and enterprises alike consider endpoint security solutions that are intelligent, adaptive and can quickly analyse threat data and turn that into dynamic protection.” For more information on Immunet by Sourcefire please visit: www.sourcefire.com About Sourcefire Sourcefire, Inc.
