Silk & Sawdust, the vintage-inspired fashion label with a unique remit, is thrilled to present its third Autumn/Winter collection. The label takes some of the clean silhouettes of the 20th century and reinvents them to create pared-back, timeless pieces. Each design is made to last – bringing effortless elegance, sophistication and a subtle sexiness within everyday reach.
The Autumn/Winter collection, available online at http://www.silkandsawdust.com with prices from £69 to £189, takes it’s inspiration from the stand-out styles of the last seventy years. So whether it’s Forties glamour, the Sixties spirit or Seventies decadence,
each piece is rooted in the past – and for a reason.
Owner/designer Claudia Orrell explains: “I wanted to get away from the ‘wear-it-then bin-it’ approach of the high street. My favourite wardrobe staples are invariably vintage pieces that are special because they’ve been made with old-fashioned tailoring skills.
I felt that the attention to detail was missing in so many modern clothes.
“My aim is to balance classic elegance with a truly modern ethos. In some ways my designs are slightly anti-fashion because you can wear them season after season. So they’re real investment pieces. But I’ve kept the costs reasonable too. I don’t believe
you should have to bankrupt yourself to own statement-making clothes. A great deal of my inspiration comes simply from a desire to make women feel gorgeous – whether they are an at-home-mum or a high-flying executive.”
All of the pieces are hand-tailored by skilled dressmakers. The fabrics are selected to ensure the clothes move with the body to flatter and make you feel extra glamorous – just like they did in days gone by. Claudia says, “I love this time of year – not least for the chance to replenish my wardrobe. The days may be drawing in but nobody minds treating themselves to a new coat or dress for the season. I’ve taken my inspiration from the jewel colours of the Bangkok markets where I source many of the materials for each collection. I’ve also had a little fun with hems this season – frills, diaphanous layers, and some cheeky shorter structures add even more variety to the look.”
Silk & Sawdust was a winner of Pure London’s Next Generation competition, presenting this A/W11 collection at Pure Spirit at Earls Court in February this year. The brand has also been involved in Norwich Fashion Week, receiving extensive press coverage.
